The Future of the Russian-Ukrainian War and its Impact on European Security Strategy

Abstract

The Russian war against Ukraine is one of the most complex wars Europe has witnessed in the twenty-first century. Its complexity lies in the ambiguity of its outcomes. The well-established fact is that its many possible paths will affect European security, and removing its consequences will take a long time. This article analyzes how Russian-Ukrainian war scenarios could impact the future of European security. The problem manifested itself in the prevailing and inaccurate understanding that the impact of the war on European security would be limited and not comprehensive, that it would be limited to the military security repercussions and not extend beyond to other aspects, and that the Russian defeat would lead to the achievement of European security. Therefore, the study attempts to address this problem. The main question is: What is the impact of the Russian war tracks against Ukraine on European security? The research hypothesis posits that European security will be adversely affected in multiple ways, regardless of whether Russia wins or defeats or the status quo persists in the ongoing war. These repercussions will extend beyond military considerations. Moreover, the traditional European security structure is no longer viable in light of Russia's war against Ukraine. The internal strategic environments of both Ukraine and Russia, as well as the support offered by European powers and the United States, will significantly influence the situation. If the Russian Federation wins the war European security will be threatened, and the divisions between Europe and the United States will deepen, undermining efforts toward security independence. Conversely, if Ukraine manages to encounter the Russian advance, the situation may only be temporarily stable. However, a defeat for Russia in Ukraine could have significant repercussions, especially if the internal political system remains cohesive. In this scenario, Russia may resort to using nuclear weapons at a strategic level, as it would be unwilling to accept being viewed as a defeated state by the West. This situation could lead to a breakdown in the security architecture of the European Union unless comprehensive negotiations are pursued.
